Big Sky Carvers Decoy- Greenhead Drake Man Cave, Den, or Lodge
This is a Big Sky Carvers Greenhead Mallard Drake Decorative Decoy that was made in 1982 in Boseman, Montana. It is in near perfect condition with the exception of a very small dent on the front forehead. It is small, measuring 10.5 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 5.25 inches tall. It weighs just over 15 ounces. Big Sky Carvers was founded in 1980 by Eric and Mark Pierce in Boseman, Montana. They employed a number of local carvers and, expecially artists, to paint their variety of machine and hand carved decoys and their company became quite well known and successful. This decoy we thought was interesting for a number of reasons. It is from their early days as a company because it does not have their branded logo on the bottom and it is unusual to find one of their decoys that is not signed by the artist. It also appears to us to be a Mallard Drake painted onto a body intended to be another type of decoy. Anyway, we though this little guy might appeal to someone who collects Big Sky Carvers decoys. Big Sky Carvers Decoy Canvasback Drake Duck Wood New
Listing another beauty from my collection, only to make room for other beauties… I listed this canvasback new, only because it is in condition as when bought new-beautiful paint, original, no scuffs, or dents. I want to note in pictures 3 & 4, there has always been a close line of birthmark natural indentations in the wood on the black part of his chest, that werent completely sanded out; but original paint is completely covering them. Just want to note that in case of questions about those photos. So I pass this along to someone who may enjoy it. It is very beautiful, Ive found it to be my favorite Big Sky Canvasback ever made. On bottom, date says 1999, and it is numbered #4551 by the artist, Gordon Alcorn. It is a wonderful example, original red glass eyes. He has been cared for greatly, and is ready for a new home. It is painted with a paint that gives a drying cracked antique look which is sort of appealing and we believe was one of a series they did in the 1990s. We have had a few other Big Sky Carver decoys by K. Basta and they were all very well done. This one is quite unique and we were not able to find another identical to it. It is in like new condition with no marks or damage that we could find. Please look at the photos. It is near life size, 16 inches long, 5.5 inches wide, 7 inches tall, and weighing 2 pounds 4 ounces. It is harder and harder to find Big Sky Carvers Decoys such as this one. Their new lines are often made of resin in China. We really prefer the original ones made in Montana and, even though this is not their earliest, it is still made in America. It would be very nice in a man-cave, den, lodge, or cabin, places where you just never have enough decorative decoys. Big Sky Carvers S. McMurry Pintail Drake Decorative Decoy Man Cave, Den or Cabin
Big Sky Carvers Pierce Brothers began making decorative decoys in their garage in the early 80’s in Boseman, Montana. They hired artists from the surrounding area to finish and paint their decoys and many of those artists became quite well known for their work. Eventually, the company expanded their product line to a varitey of animals, often bears and at some point the company changed ownership. Their decoys are not uncommon but depending on the artist and decoy, some are quite rare and they are not easily found. This Pintail drake dated 1999, signed by Sally McMurry, and numbered 1033 is one of my personal favorites and we invite you to take a closer look. It is in like new condition. It is near life size, 20 inches long, 5.5 inches wide, 7 inches tall and weighs over 2 pounds. Carved from solid wood, it is painted and stained to allow the wood grain to show through and is just very well done. We searched but could not find another like this one being offered. They are not available for sale any more from the company and owners just hang onto them. These Big Sky Carvers decoys are a great gift idea for any sportsman and look so good in that man cave, cabin, lodge, or den. We really cannot imagine anyone ever sending this one back.
