Big Sky Carvers Black Duck Decoy Master’s Edition by John Gewerth
This is a Big Sky Carvers Masters Edition Black Duck Decorative Decoy. It is signed on the underneath by Jon Gewerth and has a medallion which says, Big Sky Carvers, Master’s Edition Woodcarving, Boseman, MT, USA, 791/1250. It is typical of Big Sky Carver Decoys with detailed painting and staining which show the wood grain and lifelike colors. It appears to be without flaw. It is near life size, measuring 13 inches long, 6.5 inches wide, 7.5 inches tall and weighs 3 pounds, 3 ounces. It is not dated but we believe these Master’s Editions were made during the 1990’s. Jon Gewerth is one of the most well known and highly regarded of the Big Sky Decoy artists. We found this brief biography about him. John being an avid waterfowl hunter for over 35 years didnt see his first hand-carved decorative duck decoy until the mid-1970s. Immediately he began collecting them and when that no longer satisfied him, he eventually started carving them himself. John has since won a number of Best in Shows in regional decorative carving competitions. In 1981, he was awarded Best of Show Floating Decorative Decoy at the World Championship. From that point, he began competing in the Decorative Floating Pairs category and has finished in the top three at least four times. John began carving for Big Sky Carvers in 1983 and has enjoyed crafting decorative carvings ever since. His decoys have placed highly in world and national competitions. We live in Utah and to our best of knowledge, have never encountered a Black Duck. Our bird book shows them mostly being found in the Eastern United States but they do look very similiar to a hen mallard. The decoy is wonderful and we thought a great addition to a collection or a gift for someone more familiar with Black Ducks.
