This is a Big Sky Carvers Canvasback Drake Decorative Decoy. It was finished by Grace Blake but not dated or numbered. It does have her signature, her writing below her signature of “Canvasback, ” and the Big Sky Carvers branded logo. It is kind of a beast, somewhat reminding us of the oversized Canvasbacks done by Tom Taber. The branded logo says Manhattan, MT, so the Decoy was made sometime after they moved from Boseman, MT, in the early 90’s. It is larger than life-size, being almost 17 inches from beak to tail. It is 8.5 inches tall, 6.5 inches wide, and weighs in at nearly 4 pounds. We have loved Big Sky Carvers Decoys from the mid 80’s. We have preferred the earlier ones but this one is very well done and we would not have been surprised to find a date from the 80’s. The photos show the typical finish of paints and transparent stains that enhance the natural beauty of the bird. Anyway, it is in great condition and a worthy gift for anyone who appreciates one of the most beautiful of waterfowl…. Or a well done decorative decoy. At the listed price.
This is a Common Loon made by Big Sky Carvers of Bozeman, Mt. It is signed on the bottom by its artist, Parke Goodman, and has the Big Sky Carvers Brand on the underneath. There is no date on the Loon but Big Sky Carvers moved their Company from Boseman to Manhattan, Mt, in 1987 so it must have been made prior to that date. The Loon Decoy is close to life size, maybe a bit smaller. It measures 16.5 inches from beak to tail. It is 5.25 inches wide and 6 inches tall. It weighs nearly 2 pounds. This Loon is typical of Big Sky Carvers Decoys in that it is made of pine, hand painted by a very talented artist, and makes a very handsome bird look so good. The paints and finishes they used allow the wood grain to show which adds to their beauty. The Company may still be in business but after an early focus on decorative decoys, they expanded to carvings of bears and other animals, furniture, and other items. If they are still making decoys, they most likely are made in Asia. In my view, the early decoys made in the 1980’s are high quality treasures done by outstanding artists from the local community. Please study the photos and see what you think. It is nearly perfect. We could find one very tiny dent and a couple of white spots on its back where the resin in the pine may have bled through the paint. If you, or a friend have a cabin by a lake that has loons calling, you need this guy to join in the fun. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Animals\Birds\Loons”. This is a Canvasback Drake Decorative Decoy carved by Big Sky Carvers of Boseman, Montana. It was hand painted by artist, Craig Fellows and is signed by him on the bottom but not dated. It has the Big Sky Carvers logo branded on the underneath also. The decoy is in very good condition but has a couple small dents on the beak and some slight marring, scratching on the sides so it is not perfect. It is typical of the early Big Sky Carvers Decoys in that it is finished with a combination of paints and stains that make an already stunning bird look even better. It is a bit larger that life size, measuring 17 inches long, 6.75 inches wide, and 9 inches tall. It weighs 4 pounds. Big Sky Carvers began making decorative decoys in the early 1980’s in Boseman, Montana, Later they moved to Manhattan, Montana a short distance away. The Company was very successful and their decoys were very well done and quite popular. They hired a number of local artists who were very skilled. Fellows is one of their highly regarded artists and rightly so. They may still continue to offer some decorative decoys, many of them made in Asia. We much prefer their earlier ones such as this guy. We invite you to look over the photos and make an offer. Even with a few minor issues it is a stunning work of art and they do not make them like this any longer. This is a Big Sky Carvers Canadian Goose Decorative Decoy in a preening type of pose. It is signed on the bottom by T. Bouldin and has the Big Sky Carvers Brand on the bottom also. There is an anchor cord wrapped around its neck which has a lead anchor. It is not dated but earlier Big Sky Carver’s Decoys had a brand from Bozeman, MT, while this one is from Manhatten, Mt. We do not have a complete Big Sky Carver’s History but in the early 2000’s the Company Ownership changed and the brand may be from that time period. In any event it is a nicely done decoy and in very good condition. The photos are its best description. Note that it does have some slight marring on the lower right side. The Decoy measures 17 inches long, 6.25 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall. It weighs 5 pounds, 2 ounces including the attached lead anchor. We have loved Big Sky Carver Decoys and this one is a favorite. It is finished with paints and stains which allow the wood grain to show through plus has a very graceful, unusual pose. We could not find it being offered anywhere and invite your inspection and offer. It certainly would be a treasured addition to any collection of Big Sky Carver’s Decoys. Very carefully packed to protect that fragile neck. The item “Big Sky Carvers Preening Goose Decoy-Man Cave, Cabin, Lodge, Den Decor” is in sale since Wednesday, October 28, 2020.
